My First NYFW: The Breakdown Edit

February 11th-16th marked one of the most exciting weeks on the annual fashion calendar: New York Fashion Week. Spring, known for producing new life both figuratively and literally, is also responsible for the birth of fresh fashions that designers are known to plan for years in advance.

Spring 2022’s NYFW was defined by an array of aesthetics, from camp fashion, to true streetwear, and luxury ensembles. This year, I was lucky enough to experience my first NYFW, where the electric energy that traveled through the Big Apple flowed right through me for the entire weekend. Let’s get into some details about my experience in New York City.

STREET STYLE. STREET STYLE. STREET STYLE.

People from all over the world travel to the overpopulated city to showcase their most impressive outfits and outlandish styles. You do not have to be in the fashion industry to know that NYC is home to some of the most eclectic and invigorating street fashions in the world. Simply put, street style can be defined as fashion produced from a grassroots perspective (starting from the bottom) vs. funneling down from haute couture designers. In street style, the general public of a given area is responsible for determining what the street style of that region is. Street style is diverse and always evolving.

I was amazed to witness so many individuals speak 1000 words without even uttering a sentence– all by exercising their personalized street style. Strolling through the streets of Midtown and Little Italy alone would make you believe you’ve scored front row tickets to some of the most anticipated streetwear shows of the season. Oversized garments, intricate silhouettes, and subversive fashions categorized the stylish outfits that made appearances during NYFW.

SOMETHING IN THE WATER…

One of my favorite experiences from fashion week was simply the high level of energy that paraded through the streets, transferring from person to person. The creative juices that were emitted from so many individuals made it impossible to NOT feel driven, inspired, or motivated while in the city. On every corner there was a collection of creatives networking to exchange resources and build excitement around their personal projects and brands.

On Saturday Feb. 12, “Beautiful Faces NYC”, an event hub for the young & urban community in New York, hosted a charming event titled “I ❤ Beautiful Faces” to bring in the start of NYFW and Valentine’s Day weekend. This event fostered an enchanting aura that, in part, was so amazing due to its kinetic energy, as well as the scene’s endless waves of beautiful faces (no pun intended). Creative minds of all paths basked in each other’s talents and absorbed the opportunities that this social event had to offer. “I ❤ Beautiful Faces” was definitely an affair to remember and was a highlight of my NYFW weekend!

SHOPPING IN SOHO

When traveling to the “City of Dreams”, it’s imperative to make your way to Soho.

This progressive NY neighborhood is known for its bursts of culture within food, fashion, landmarks, and museums. People of all ages strut the bustling Soho avenues to visit their favorite luxury stores and indulge in some of the most delicious cuisine found in the city.

SOHO

As a fashion enthusiast and shopping addict, I had to make it to Soho to do some extreme window shopping and visualize what my dream wardrobe for this season would consist of. I was able to narrow down my favorites to pieces from the storefronts of Lanvin, Maison Mariela, and Marni.
